Structure of the British Formula Ford Championship

Class Structure

It has long since been established that Formula Ford is best for drivers as a two year formula, starting with the Scholarship Cup then graduating to the Championship class.

The British Championship - 1600cc, the Duratec engine

Uses 2009 or older cars and is for more experienced drivers looking to progress their motor racing career.

The Scholarship Cup - 1600cc, the Duratec engine

Allows less experienced drivers to compete at Championship level in 2008 or cars that are a year old or more, while still learning the circuits, race craft and getting to grips with the cars. This is not to say that Scholarship drivers are not competitive - previous years have witnessed podium places for Scholarship drivers, which of course attracted particular attention to their potential. The Scholarship is only open to drivers who have not previously registered in the Formula Ford Championship for more than four events, nor have competed in equivalent national single-seater championships, and who are driving a car that is at least one year old. Both classes will race together, and points awarded overall. Scholarship drivers will also be awarded points towards the Scholarship Title.

The Racing Licence minimum requirements for Championship and Scholarship are MSA Race National B for drivers registering for the championship or recognised equivalent for guest drivers. Awards and champagne will be presented to the top three classified finishers for each round in both Championship and winner of Scholarship.

Guest Drivers

Where grid space allows, the British Formula Ford Championship is very keen to invite in drivers who are not in a position to contest in the full championship on a guest basis. These drivers will not be registered in the Championship, and hence will not take points, prizes or awards away from the registered drivers who are chasing the title. But in all other respects, we will welcome these drivers. Guest drivers from other Duratec Championships are also very welcome to join us with their cars. With thriving championships in a number of European countries, we are anticipating some very successful drivers and teams will again contest selected 2009 UK rounds that fit around their national programme.
